It took Mendelssohn only one day in December 1832 to write his Concert Piece Op. 113 for his friends the clarinetists Heinrich and Carl Baermann. The composer cheekily subtitled it a "Grand Duo for Dumplings or Strudel ...". A few weeks later he completed the orchestral version which the Trio di Clarone issued as a first edition in 1990 (PB/OB 5191). The chamber-music setting also did not appear until after the composers death in editions which were all based on Baermanns well-meaning arrangements, but which diverge from Mendelssohns autograph in countless passages. The new edition KM 2259 thus offers the first critical edition of Mendelssohns Concert Piece Op.113 for clarinet, basset horn and piano.
